The ‘Jewels in our Crown’!

Here at Florence Melly we encourage our children to express their opinion, formulate ideas and learn to discuss and debate issues that affect both our school and the wider community.  We encourage all our children to be active citizens and free thinkers, able to understand the important role that they play in society.

Our Junior Leadership Team is elected from children in Year 2 through to Year 5. The children democratically elect one child from each class to represent their opinions. The term of office is two academic years (as decided by the children). In addition to this, the whole-school elects twelve DREAM Team captains, two from each of our teams, which are named after our school core values (Team Determination, Team Respect, Team Empowerment, Team Appreciation, Team Motivation and Team Safety). Our DREAM Team captains are elected from Year 6 and these pupils also sit on our Junior Leadership Team.

The children meet regularly to discuss issues, volunteer ideas and raise money for our school. At the start of each academic year, they agree their priorities for the year and begin work on improving our school for all of its stakeholders! They sign our JLT charter and agree to uphold the duties and expectations set out in this important document. It’s all very official and the children absolutely love taking on these important roles.

We are also involved in the Liverpool Schools’ Parliament. Each half term the children meet with other schools across the city in Liverpool Town Hall to discuss city wide issues of concern to children and young people. A variety of businesses, city council organisations and other projects regularly attend the meetings to ask for the children’s advice and opinions on current issues.
