“The important thing is to never stop questioning” Albert Einstein

At Florence Melly we are scientists! We want our children to love science. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be astronauts, forensic scientists, toxicologists or microbiologists.

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. National Curriculum (2013)

Bringing Science Alive at Florence Melly!

We often use the vibrancy of Liverpool as a vehicle  to enrich pupils’ time in our school with memorable and unforgettable experiences, trips, lessons and clubs. Here are just a few examples of how we have brought our science curriculum alive this year:

  • Our children have engaged in a whole host of activities in honour of British Science Week. This year marked the 30th anniversary of British Science Week, a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, featuring entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages. This year’s theme was ‘time’ and Mr Mullin, our Science Lead, arranged lots of exciting activities, competitions and visits in recognition of the celebration. The children have immersed themselves into all things Science including; mini-beasts virtual reality, chemical reaction and STEM challenge workshops, a recycle right project and our Science poster competition. The fun didn’t end there though – the weeks that followed were packed full of trips to the new Eureka Science and Discovery Centre in Seacombe Ferry and our very own hatchlings.

Our Science Policy

Please take a few minutes to read through our Science policy, created by our Science Lead, Mr Mullin. If you have any questions or concerns about any aspect of this policy or our approach to science, please get in touch: j.mullin@fmp.liverpool.sch.uk.

Our Science Curriculum Rationale

Science Subject Characteristics

Science subject specific characteristics, which we expect the children to demonstrate, have been developed and shared with all stakeholders. These characteristics underpin all work in science and form a focal point for display areas and provide a common subject specific vocabulary for staff and pupils.

At Florence Melly, we are Scientists. We have…

  • The ability to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings.
  • Confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills, taking the initiative in, for example, planning and carrying out scientific investigations.
  • Excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving challenging problems and reporting scientific findings.
  • High levels of originality, imagination or innovation in the application of skills.
  • The ability to undertake practical work in a variety of contexts, including fieldwork.
  • A passion for science and its application in past, present and future technologies.
